NOTES FROM THE ARRANGER
This album has been a long time in the making, a good year learning, rehearsing and recording & the year before writing all of the arrangements.
The musical inspiration for the album has come from classic musicals & film scores and the title 'Stage & Screen' completely encapsulates everything that the album is about.
I have included three A Cappella tracks on the album - A Cappella is extremely demanding, it reveals any imperfection and every tiny flaw, thus making it a challenging experience and a great achievement.
This marks the very beginning of the musical journey for Muzaria and further down the road I would really like to explore more of the unplugged sounds with minimal accompaniment, with just our vocals and perhaps acoustic Piano and the luxury of real strings.
When I am arranging music for Muzaria I respect the original composition - I try to stay true to the original classics whilst adding my own interpretation with perhaps nuances that may not appear in the original score.
I score for each voice to make them sound interesting in their perspective ranges. I often score tenors above altos, or alto and tenors to sing at same pitch in order to exploit the different timbres in their natural voices! Altos rich, deep and dark combined with the resonance and bright tone of the tenors makes for an interesting and unique combination. Even though I have been told for years this is in fact against text book methods, I think this is part of what brings an originality to my music and makes my style unique.
I do tend to avoid doing the expected and go for the unexpected. I don't like doing what others do, not just for the sake of being different but for creative reasons. I like to explore new sounds, methods and unusual avenues of music, not bizarre or quirky - it's just musical curiosity!
I find that I'm not interested in, or captivated by performers that are technically perfect but lack any emotion, originality or any degree of connection or engagement with the listener - they do nothing for me, I prefer performers that can tell a story and connect with the audience.
In my solo work I always try to convey honesty, vulnerability, passion and truth in my story telling, whilst taking the listener on a fascinating emotional journey.
Of course all this on zero budget has its challenges and frustrations, yet it somehow empowers me to be even more determined to succeed musically and test people's imagination.
I am pleased with the results of all the hard work - it looks and sounds fabulous !
